How do you make objects interact in level editor?

So how do you make a red button open a red gate in level editor, or can you at all? Also, how do you make a level that's not an action level in the level editor? I'm not sure that you can do either of these, as I've been tinkering with the settings for almost an hour, and no progrees on either. Is there somting I'm missing, or what?

I've been trying to figure out how to make objects stay in place instead of moving, like most "metal" in the original levels.
